All wool starts out from cute lambs. Some produce wool suitable only for felting, while other breeds are so fine that they put Cashmere to shame. As sheep have been with us for over a millenia they have evolved and most breeds require shearing to keep them healthy. Unshorn sheep suffer if they are left to 'be wild'. Therefore we are obligated to provide them with proper care and annual shearing.
Humane shearing can be done with electric clippers or hand blades. We ourselves use both. Some sheep don't like the sound, so we let them enjoy the quiet of the hand blade. While pro's can speed along we have the luxury of time and it takes us about 8 minutes to shear each sheep.
After shearing wool is sorted. Some will be for fine spinning into textiles.
